The Application

Darwin and I applied for our marriage license.  Things have changed quite a lot since 1990, the first time I applied for one.  Back then, a prospective couple was required to attend an STD workshop (a thinly-disguised attempt at HIV/AIDS education) and present a certificate from said workshop.  You also had to show your birth certificate, and both of you had to appear at the courthouse in person.

Now, you can start the application process on line.  You fill out the Internet form, which has been updated to say "Applicant A" and "Applicant B" instead of "Bride" and "Groom."  "Applicant B" is asked for a previous name and "Applicant A" is not, so the update isn't perfect yet (what if two women are gettng married and both have previous names?), but the previous name is optional, so we won't worry overmuch.

After three days have passed, only one of you is required to visit the courthouse with both applicants' social security numbers and either a passport or birth certificate for each.  And you have to pay $20.

It's much easier now than it used to be.

Marriage License
In LA, one enters info into a terminal. This is when one can select a new name, as we did, Montes Kerr would become out last names. Then one enters the line and sees that many of these kids are way too young to get married. With showing ID, and paying a small fee, a stamp is given by the clerk. At this moment the name change is in lawful effect. However the name change is only filed with the court with the filing of the witnessed marriage license.

RE: Marriage License
The name change is something I will be dealing with a very soon. I actually have to do a bit of research. I don't think the County Clerk handles it at all.
