Million Soup

Campbell's Soup has aired an ad that shows a child with two dads:

It's a cute ad, and best of all, it ONLY works with two dads.  Predictably, the right wing went 'splody head.  The so-called Million Moms group (which was started by the hate group American Family Association and has only has a few hundred members) shrieked for a boycott.

Also predictably, the boycott is going nowhere.  Part of it is that the Moping Moms call for so many boycotts that if you listened to them, you'd never be able to buy anything at all, and part of it is that LGBT people are gaining more and more mainstream support.  The screeching is diminishing, leaving us to enjoy our soup.

I guess no one told the Couple o'Hundred Moms that Campbell's Soup is a wholesome American icon, made even more so by Andy Warhol. You know Warhol? That gay artist from Godless New York City?

As for boycotts, I remember when I was about 12 (in the late 70s), I saw my Grandfather run afoul of the effect you mention. I was visiting my Irish grandparents when my Grandfather received a letter from the Ancient Order of Hibernians. It called for a boycott on any products produce by British corporations or their subsidiaries. It contained a long list of brand names.

My Grandfather started pulling items out of the pantry and the medicine closet, filling box after box. When he was done, I watched him move his gaze back and forth between the nearly empty shelves and the full-to-the-brim boxes. Then he laughed, said "I'll just send the IRA some money", and put it all back on the shelves.

I love it! What's the opposite of boycott? Giving money to the opposition, I suppose.
