I got to see a preview of an illustration for my story "The Soul Jar," which will appear in the upcoming anthology THE SHADOW CONSPIRACY. The illo is pretty cool! Mechanical spiders and a ringmaster done as . . . I don't know how to describe the style. Art shapes? Anyway, I like it.
Can science fiction ever be respected? My answer, along with those of Gene Wolf, Kris Rusch, and others at SFSignal: http://www.sfsignal.com/archives/2009/10/s peculative-fiction-and-mainstream-accept ance-part-1/
Just in time for Halloween, STRIP MAULED has hit the shelves! Witches had their turn in suburbia with WITCH WAY TO THE MALL. Now it's time for the werewolves to step up.

We have stories in it by three--count 'em THREE--Michiganders: me, Karen Everson, and Jim Hines (
They're great for handing out during trick-or-treat! :)
(The following is a true record of today's writing.)
Shock numbed Gavin. He barely felt the hands that snatched his fiddle away, barely noticed that he was being hauled toward the crate where he’d been playing merry music only a few minutes earlier. One of the pirates drew his cutlass. It gleamed green in the phosphorescent light. Gavin’s hands were yanked down to the crate and laid across the rough wood, wrist up. The pirate raised the blade...
"Daddy! Mom says it's time to eat."
To be continued.
I just finished reading an agent's blog post about creativity in writing ideas, and one of commenters self-identified as a new writer who claimed she didn't "get why an author needs to be well-read." In fact, she called herself "not extremely well-read," and went on to explain that she deliberately avoided reading anything similar to what she was working on so she would avoid unconcsious imitation.
I suppose I should be pleased. Her novels won't ever see the light of day and won't compete with mine.
Of =course= an author must read. Only a fool would think otherwise. A painter must study other paintings to see how they're done. A scultpor studies other sculptures to see how they're put together. An actor attends hundreds of movies and plays to see how other actors work. And can you imagine hearing a wanna-be chef say, "I never eat other people's cooking"?
If you want to write, you must read. You must read to see what works and what doesn't work. You have to look at how stories are structured. You have to look at what makes characters breathe and live on a printed page. You have to see setting and description done properly. How can you possibly see if you're doing well when you have nothing to compare it to?
Read, read, read, and read some more.

I'm sorry, Gavin. I'm really, really sorry. You're only 17 and a really nice kid and terrible things will happen to your life over the next several chapters. The more I write, the more I hate doing this to you, but it has to be done or the story won't go anywhere. I'm really, truly sorry, and I'll be with you every step of the way, and I promise things will eventually get better.
Best,
Steven
AfterElton.com blogged about their favorite eight gay-inclusive SF/F writers. Among their choices were Octavia Butler, Mercedes Lackey--and me! In fact, I got top billing!
It happened a while ago, and I just found out about it. That's so neat! The link is here:

My agent delivered a keynote speech about writing in the emerging e-publishing age. She posted the text here: http://varkat.livejournal.com/117113.htm l?style=mine#cutid1 V. interesting.
I forgot to mention--there's a free short-short story by me on today's Book View Cafe front page. "Chain, Link, Fence." Go read it! It has sex in it.

HELP JEANNE STAY HEALTHY
This year a brilliant surgeon, Dr. Andresz Busczowski, helped Jeanne Robinson beat back a rare and virulent form of biliary cancer. But it's so rare even he can't say how much time he's bought her, how soon it might recur. For technical reasons she is not a candidate for either radiation or chemo. Her only hope for longterm survival is therefore to reboot and reinvigorate her failed immune system. She needs special therapies and meds, extensive diet and lifestyle changes, and a stress level as close to zero as possible. All those are expensive, none
are covered by even Canada's excellent medical care...and like many artists today the Robinsons were already running on fumes financially.
But Jeanne, a Soto Zen monk, has been spreading love and kindness in all directions for a long time. So her Buddhist sangha in Vancouver, her neighbors on Bowen Island, and friends as far away as Florida have all spontaneously come together to raise funds to help keep her around as long as possible. Your participation is welcomed. A Bowen benefit concert, "WE DREAM FOR JEANNE," will be held at Cates Hill Chapel at 7:30 PM on Friday Sept 18 details here; cheques may be made out to Jeanne Robinson in Trust and sent to Mountain Rain Zen Center, 6183 Fraser St. Vancouver, BC V5W 2Z9; goods or services can be donated for eBay auction by contacting Jan Schroeder at (dreamforjeanne@aol.com), and PayPal donations can be sent to http://wedreamforjeanne.blogspot.co m/ .

I read Queen of the Orcs: King's Property on my Kindle because it looked promising. It starts off well, but ultimately fails.
Dar is half kidnapped, half sold by her parents into the king's army, where she is branded and enslaved. Most frighteningly, she is required to serve food to the orcs, the shock troops of the army. The orcs' reputation for brutality terrifies Dar, but ultimately she discovers that the orcs have more to them than she thought.
The book starts off well. It moves quickly. Dar is a likeable, well-drawn character, initially. The prose is clear, in a "bread and butter" style. (If you want poetic metaphors, look elsewhere.) Quite readable. But early on, the themes start smashing you over the head, and they ain't fun.

Got more than halfway through chapter one of the WIP when I realized I had started the book way too early, thus destroying ten pages of work. Yargh! I can still use chunks of the original, but I still have to essentially start over.
Ah well. Better to figure it out now than 50,000 words from now.

1,100 new words today, and much rewriting of old words. Not bad.
OFFSPRING, the fourth and final book of the Silent Empire, is now available on Kindle. Yay!
The lush and beautiful forest planet of Bellerophon is home to a cacophony of noises, but its resident psychics are known as the Silent. Previously they could travel to the Dream, a telepathic plane of existence where they could twist the laws of reality. But that time is over...
One madman's lust for power tore the Dream asunder. Now only a handful of the Silent can enter it. Kendi Weaver is one of them.
As an election for the governorship of Bellerophon begins, Kendi is caught in the crossfire. Attempts on his life—and a rash of Silent kidnappings—point to a political enemy...or a personal one. Either way, the future of the Dream is at stake. And Kendi fears it may become a nightmare.

Just finished the rough synopsis for a new novel, a steampunk book. Ohhhh, I do like this one. I like all the ones I write, but this one is massively cool. It even impressed Aran. He leaned over my shoulder and asked, "What kind of book are you writing?"
"It's called steampunk," I said. "It has giant robots in it. And zombies."
"Coooool!" he said.
